A custom replica watch starts as a factory watch and changes in one or more of four areas: the metal, the stones, the weight or the movement. The work runs from a few microns of gold plating to a case, bezel and bracelet machined from solid 18k gold, and from a moissanite bezel to a "bust-down" with diamonds on the bezel, dial, case and bracelet. Some builds also use genuine parts, such as a genuine dial or crystal. This guide explains each option, the prices that owners have published, and the terms to get in writing before any work starts.
What you can change on a custom replica watch
| Area | Options | What to specify in writing |
|---|---|---|
| Metal | Gold plating in 18k white, rose or yellow; thicker plating ("gold wrap"); solid 18k gold parts such as the bezel, case, clasp or bracelet; platinum plating | The thickness in microns, or the karat and weight of each solid part, and which parts it covers |
| Weight | A weighted build, with tungsten inside a plated case | The target weight in grams, shown on a scale in the QC photos |
| Stones | Moissanite, lab-grown diamonds or natural diamonds, on the bezel, dial, lugs, case or bracelet | The stone type, the total carat weight for each part and, for diamonds, the colour and clarity range |
| Movement | A clone movement, a hand-built movement, a rotor in real gold, or a genuine movement where one can be sourced | The calibre name, the rotor metal and a timegrapher reading |
| Genuine parts | A genuine dial, hands or crystal on a replica case, often called a "franken" build | Which parts are genuine, and what happens if a part cannot be found |
| Strap | Alligator or cowhide leather | The leather type and the buckle or clasp |
For the gold options in detail, with weights and plating thickness, see gold Rolex replica: plated, wrapped, weighted or solid 18k.
Diamonds, lab-grown diamonds or moissanite
The stone type decides the price more than any other choice. A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond, grown in a laboratory. Moissanite is a different material, silicon carbide, which looks similar.
| Property | Moissanite | Lab-grown diamond | Natural diamond |
|---|---|---|---|
| Material | Silicon carbide, a diamond simulant | Diamond (carbon), made in a laboratory | Diamond (carbon), formed in the earth |
| Mohs hardness | 9.25 | 10 | 10 |
| Refractive index | 2.648 to 2.691 | 2.417 | 2.417 |
| Dispersion ("fire") | 0.104 | 0.044 | 0.044 |
| How to tell | Doubled facet edges under magnification; can pass a thermal diamond tester | Needs laboratory equipment to separate from natural | Needs laboratory equipment to separate from lab-grown |
Moissanite shows more coloured "fire" than diamond, because its dispersion is more than twice as high.
How much stone? There is no standard "bust-down" weight. As a reference from jewellers that set genuine watches, one two-tone Datejust 41 bust-down is listed with 20 carats of diamonds. Ask for the carat weight of each part, not one total.
What the dealers on our list offer
RepTime Boutique and Reverie Watches publish the same custom options on their "How we operate" pages:
- Gold: 18k white, rose or yellow gold plating, or a watch made entirely in those metals.
- Stones: moissanite, lab-grown diamonds or natural diamonds.
- Straps: genuine alligator or cowhide leather.
- Genuine parts: builds with genuine parts. The pages say the movement is the hardest part to source.
In October 2026 the dealers also confirmed to us:
- Weighted builds, closer to the weight of the genuine watch
- A rotor in real gold
- Hand-built movements, and a genuine movement where they can source one
- Genuine dials, fitted to a replica case (a "franken" build)
- A sapphire crystal of the highest quality
- Platinum plating as well as gold plating
- Any brand in their catalogue, from a Rolex Day-Date or Daytona to a Patek Philippe Aquanaut
There is no fixed price list. Each build gets its own quote. To ask for a quote, use the contact button on the dealer's entry in our Trusted Dealers list.
How a custom order works, step by step
- Choose the base watch. Name the reference and the factory, for example a GMF Day-Date 40 or a VSF weighted Daytona. The base sets the case shape, the dial and the movement that the custom work starts from. Our factory profiles compare the main factories.
- Write the specification. Use the table above: metal and thickness, stones and carat weight, movement, genuine parts, strap.
- Get a written quote. It must give the total price, the payment stages and the lead time. Ask what happens if a genuine part cannot be found, and whether you can cancel once the work starts.
- Approve the base watch. Ask for QC photos of the base watch before any work.
- Approve the finished watch. Ask for photos, a short video, the weight on a scale and a timegrapher reading after the work.
- Keep the record. Save the quote, the photos and the messages. Our seller terms guide lists the fields to keep.
Lead times and the main risk
Owner reports give a range, not a rule. In October 2025, one plating job took eight days from posting the watch to its return, against an allowance of up to 21 days. In a September 2026 thread about one modder, a buyer reported nearly seven weeks with problems still open.
The main risk is a part that cannot be found. In an October 2026 complaint about a different seller, a buyer alleged paying US$1,600 up front, waiting seven weeks and then hearing that the requested dial could not be sourced. Agree in writing what happens to your money in that case.
What custom work costs: reported prices
The dealers on our list quote each build. For reference, these are prices and quotes that owners and workshops published on Reddit. They are self-reported, not verified invoices.
| Date | Build | Reported price |
|---|---|---|
| March 2024 | Tungsten Daytona with 18k gold wrap (first described as "18K gold", then corrected) | US$2,250 |
| May 2024 | Daytona with a solid 18k case and clasp and a 4130 clone movement | US$13,500, paid by the owner |
| July 2024 | Full solid gold Daytona | about US$18,000, a commenter's market estimate |
| September 2025 | Full solid 18k Day-Date with a genuine dial, hands and crystal | 180,000 CNY, a seller's quote for the whole build |
| November 2025 | RC Factory Day-Date base, 5-micron plating and a solid 18k bezel | US$3,500 to 4,000, the workshop's estimate |
| September 2026 | Full solid 18k Day-Date 40 with a genuine baguette diamond dial | US$36,367, a quote reported by a prospective buyer |
The jump from a plated build to a solid gold build comes from the gold itself. In a May 2025 post, one workshop said its bezel prices change with the price of gold.
