Where VSF wins
Omega, without a contest. VSF is the benchmark for Omega reproductions and the only factory with credible Co-Axial movement clones. AR does not build Omega at all. If your watch is a Seamaster Diver 300M, a Planet Ocean 600M, or a Speedmaster Professional, this comparison ends here.
Movement engineering depth. VSF runs three distinct cloned calibres: the 8500 and 8800 Co-Axial for the divers, the 4130 for the Daytona, and the manual-wind 1861 for the Moonwatch. AR runs one cloned 3135 and adapts it where it needs to. Cloning a Co-Axial escapement is a harder problem than cloning a conventional lever escapement, and nothing in AR's catalogue attempts anything like it.
The Daytona. This is the only reference both build, and the movements are not equivalent. VSF's is a full cloned 4130 with 44 jewels and a 72-hour power reserve, and canon rates its case geometry alongside Clean Factory standards. AR's is a cloned 3135 base with a chronograph module added on top: it reads correctly to a non-expert through the case-back, and expert inspection reveals the difference. For a chronograph, buy the factory with a purpose-built chronograph calibre.
A hand-wound Moonwatch. The cloned 1861 makes a period-correct Speedmaster Professional possible. AR has no equivalent.
Panerai. Also VSF only.
Where AR wins
904L steel. This is AR's clearest specification advantage and it is worth stating precisely. AR uses 904L, matching genuine Rolex case specification. VSF uses 316L on most models. 904L is denser, takes a slightly warmer polish, and resists corrosion better.
The 40mm Submariner. The 116610LN and the 114060 No-Date are AR's core competence, and VSF does not build a Submariner in any size.
Price. AR runs $1,000 to $1,400 against VSF's $1,200 to $1,600. AR is the cheaper factory across the full band.
Servicing simplicity. A cloned 3135 is a conventional lever-escapement movement. VSF's Co-Axial clones are more service-intensive than conventional alternatives, and fewer watchmakers will take the job on.
The steel question, honestly
904L against 316L is a real difference and a modest one.
Rolex uses 904L, so AR's choice is the more accurate one for a Rolex reproduction. The practical gains are density in the hand, a slightly different polish, and better corrosion resistance. None of these is dramatic in isolation.
What it does not do is override a movement mismatch. A 904L case around the wrong calibre is a worse watch than a 316L case around the right one. On an Omega, VSF's cloned Co-Axial matters far more than AR's steel would, and AR does not offer the trade anyway.
